DROWNED IN MILL STREAM
OPEN VERDICT AT INQUEST ON READING WIDOW
The Reading Borough Coroner (Mr. J. L. Martin) yesterday held an inquest on Mrs. Ellen Brazell, a 55-year-old widow, Cardigan Road. Reading. who was found drowned in the Mill Stream, near Caversham Mill, on Tuesday, after being missing since January 23.
Joseph Frederick Brazell, of Cardigan Road, Reading, said his mother was the widow of Mr. Walter James Brazell, a biscuit factory labourer. He last saw her at 7.15 am, on January 23, when she appeared to be quite normal. When he returned home for dinner at 12.45 p.m. that day he found that she was missing. Mr. Brazell said his mother had never been out like it before, and after making exhaustive enquiries in the evening, he reported the matter to the police.
In reply to the Coroner, the witness remarked that his mother had a slight growth by the side of her eye, but she had not told him anything about it. She had no serious trouble and had never mentioned suicide.
Dr. M. P. Murphy, police surgeon, said he was of the opinion that Mrs. Brazell had been dead for three or four weeks. Death was due to drowning.
George Z. Luzky, of College Road, Reading. manager of Caversham Mill, said that at 11.25 a.m. on Tuesday he went outside the mill as the machinery was running slowly and saw a bundle drawn up against the grating. It was stopping the water from running properly. He found that it was the body of a woman and informed the police.
A verdict of "Found Drowned was returned.
