Daily Herald 05 July 1957 [hearing previous day 4th July 1957]
30 years she cooked for him in secret.
Every day for 30 years Grace BOWLER cooked a secret meal.
And every evening she walked half a mile from her home to lay it before ex lover, Sidney.
Her husband never knew about those 10,000 suppers that his wife had walked 10,950 miles to deliver. Yet he was subsidising them, a Divorce Cout judge said yesterday.
At first Sidney BUTCHER paid only 10s a week for seven hot meals. Later it went up to £1.
Grace is now 70. So is her gardener husband John, of Peene Cottages, Newington, near Folkestone. Next year would have been their golden wedding anniversary - but for Sidney.
He and Grace were lovers back in 1923 and the next year Grace wnet to live with him, said Mr Justice DAVIES.
John found out their address and took his wife back, promising to overlook the affair.
But Grace could not forget her lover. "In truth and in fact." said the Judge, "this woman had never ceased to be in love with Sidney'.
Grace of Broomfield road, Cheriton, near Folkestone, withdrew her opposition to a decree which her husband was granted on the ground of constructive desertion.
