Londonderry Sentinel - Tuesday 15 October 1935
WAR WIDOWS LAPSE
A respectably dressed woman, Mrs Martha KEWELL, Pine Street Londonderry, appeared at the Petty Sessions yesterday, charge with stealing a number of articles nalue 3s 91/2d, the property of a local store.
Mr A ROBB said the defendant, who admitted taking the articles without paying for them, was sixty-four years of age and a war widow, her husband having been killed at the Dardanelles. This was one of those unaccountable lapses for which no explination could be given, as she had no need to do anything of the sort, She had bourne a very good character and was employed in a factory. I January last she was ill with influensa, which had resulted in a nervous breakdown.
Rev Canoe E W COWELL MA said he had known the defedant for fourteen years, and so far as he knew she was a quiet, honest, respectable woman. He was absolutely astonished when this charge came to his knowledge.
The Chairman (Mr Jas ANDERSON) said it was very refreshing to have a clergyman coming to speak for one of his congregation.
Mr ROBB said all the articles had been recovered.
The magistrates dealt with the case under the Probation of Offenders Act on defendant paying 5s 6d costs and entering into £5 bail, with one surety of £5, to be of good behaviour for twelve months.
