        BUSES OLD AND NEW
        MR. HARRY KISIHERE'S LONG CAREER
        IN TRANSPORT WORK
The retirement in the near future of Mr. Harry Kishere, district superintendent of the Bedford division of the National Omni. bus Company, will end a connexion with transport work that has extended over 2 period of forty-two years. Except for the war period Mr. Kishere, who is an Associate of the Institute of Transport, has had control of the Bedford area since 1913 : he is the man behind the great development of omnibus services that has taken place in the district since the war. In 1919 there was one service in Bedford itself from George Street to Kempston-but now almost every neighbourhood is familiar with the green of Eastern National buses. Mr. Kishere retires with the good wishes of inspectors, drivers, conductors, and garage employees, numbering about two hundred and thirty, who have worked under him.

A few of these men were with Mr. Kishere when he became the first local manager
for the London General Omnibus Company in 1913. He had come from London where eight years before he had had the proud distinction of being the first man to drive a public motor conveyance. Mr. Kishers drove from Kilburn to Marble Arch. He recalls the days when he was a driver of a horse bus on the route between the "Queen of England ". Shepherd's Bush, and Liverpool Street. On that service he had his regular passengers who possessed their own particular seats. In high hats and frock-coats they used to sit on the top deck and were each provided with a news paper. As a London coachman, Mr. Kishere had to wear a high hat, a velvet and box-cloth coat, and white tie.
During the war eight of Mr. Kishere's buses from this area were commandeered for service abroad, and those of his men who did not join the fighting services were transferred to London. Mr. Kishere took charge of the War Lorry Department at Battersea, and was also an inspector in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary on the ambulance section. He returned to Bedford in 1919 and now the area over which he has supervision extends as far as Cambridge, St. Ives, Luton, and Rush den. At one time he supervised the running of a hundred and eight buses. The number to-day is just under one hundred. In 1920 Mr. Kishere carried out surveys in the districts of Taunton and Stroud for the purpose of establishing bus services, and these services were actually begun with men and vehicles from the Bedford area. Afterwards, of course, these men were sent back to these parts. Mr. Kishere was also responsible for the preliminary work in the establishment of services at Bridgwater. Burnham-on-Sea, Wells, Cheddar, and other places in the west of England.
Mr. Kisiere, who is sixty-one, married in 1901 Miss Lydia Vye, of Shepherd'. Bush. They are to continue to live in Bedford.
