False story of flat to rent

St Paul's man sent to prison

Sentence of 15 months imprisonment was passed at Bristol Quarter Sessions yesterday on Percy Clifford CHARD (44), of Ellbroad Street, St Paul's who pleaded guilty to two charges of false pretences, and asked for nine outstanding similar offences to be considered.
CHARD admitted obtaining £3 8s from Aubrey LEONARD SCOTT of Fishponds Road, by falsely representing that he was in a position to rent him a flat in Redland Park, and £3 from Mrs Matilda RUSSELL, of Friezewood Road, Bedminster, by falsely representing to her that he could rent her a caravan at Weymouth.
Det. Superintendent CARTER said CHARD servrd throughout the war with an exemplary character. In June 1948, he was ent to prison for six months for false pretences. Eleven othe cases were considered.
The Recorder (Mr G D ROBERTS) said CHARD had servrd his country well but nothing he had said could excuse the long list of offences he had committed. He had treated the Court with contempt and ingratitude. While waiting to be tried he promptly committed another offence.
