NORMAN Charles Frederick
Military Medal awarded 22 May 1944
On 21st March 44 L/Sjt Norman was platoon sergnt ofthe leading platoon of D Coy which attacked Yellow House from Cassino Castle (Italy 1/25,000 sheet 160 - II NW 855214). When nearing the objective the platoon commander and five of the leading section were blown up on mines and L/Sgt Norman himself wounded in the arm. Despite this he at once took charge of his platoon and led them on to the objective. He stayed with his men all night, and at dawn refused to be evacuated when his platoon were ordered back to the Castle. Throught the next day, regardless of his personal safety, he went among his men encouraging them by his cheerfulness and by his courageous bearing, untill too weak to continue, he was evacuated. When the Castle was attacked in force, he and his platoon contributed greatly to the success of the action, in which 34 prisoners were taken and more than 40 casualties inflicted.
The conduct of this NCO throught the action is worthy of the highest praise. His cheerful and confident example whilst in considerable pain played a great part in maintaining the morale of the whole garrison.
