Quarter Sessions
Before the Earl of Jersey (Vice-Chairman), the Warden
of All Souls, H. C. Risley, Esq., and the Hon. G. C. Brodrick.
AN UNEXPECTED VERDICT.
Henry Guntrip, 54, labourer, was charged with breaking and entering a warehouse, and stealing a box and sixteen pounds of raisins, the property of William Harding, at Chinnor, on the 6th of October.
Mr. H. C. Brown prosecuted.
When called upon to plead, the prisoner said the door was open, he did not break in.
The prosecutor, grocer, of Chinnor, deposed that the raisins were safe in his warehouse about half-past six on the night in question. On leaving he shut the door and latched it, but did not lock it. The following morning he missed the raisins, and then noticed a sack in the warehouse which did not belong to him. The raisins produced were similar to those which he lost.
P.C. Matthews stated that he searched the prisoner's house, and found the box of raisins secreted in a dark cellar, covered with straw. The prisoner denied all knowledge of the robbery.
Charles Wheatley, ostler at the Cross Keys, Thame, said on the 6th of October he lent the prisoner & sack similar to the one which was found in the prosecutor's warehouse.
The Foreman of the Jury wished the Earl of Jersey to ask the prisoner how he became possessed of the box. (Laughter.)
The Earl of Jersey replied that he could not ask the prisoner to say anything that would incriminate himself.
The Jury thereupon acquitted the prisoner, who was evidently surprised at the result
