HUNGERFORD POLICE
Case Against Lambourn, Motorist Dismissed.
ECHO OF A COLLISION.
A Hungerford Petty Sessions on Wednesday before Capt. A. C. Burmester, Mr. A. S. Gladstone, and Mr. A. Anderson, Percy Henry Bew, Wood. lands St. Mary, Lambourn, pleaded not guilty to having driven his motor car without due care and attention. He was defended by Mr. Maurice Cole, of Reading
Reginald Roland Rosier, of the Poplars, Hungerford said shortly after eight o'clock on August 12th he was riding his motor cycle towards Eddington bridge when he saw defendant's vehicle coming down the Wantage road. Witness was then about 20 yards away and he blew his horn. Defendant looked at him then the other way. When defendant got to the bridge he nearly stopped. Witness went to go by and defendant came out in front of him. Witness put on his brakes, skidded hit the back of the vehicle then a telegraph pole, damaging his cycle. Defendant asked witness why he did not go round the other side of him.
Supt. Simmonds: Do you mean he suggested you should go on the wrong side? -Yes.
Examined by Mr. Cole, the witness said he was going at 30-35 miles an hour. He skidded about 10-15 yards. Witness did not think he would have skidded if the road had been dry. His speed was safe if the other car had not come out in front of him.
Albert C. Siney of Newbury said he was walking towards Hungerfenl and he saw defendant hesitate. Then Rosier went to go by but defendant shot across and appeared to hem Rosier in between the bank and the vehicle. Rosier had to do his best to avoid a collision. He could not have passed the car because it was broadside across the road, the front wheels being up to the near side.
P.C. Bowering said in consequence of Rosier's statement he examined the road and found a skid mark 15ft long, starting one foot from the near side to the telegraph pole. This mark was made by the cyclist.
Bew said when he got to the corner he paused a second to see if the road was clear. It was in the Hungerford direction but in the other direction there was a motor cyclist 50 yards away. He proceeded across the road and had completed his turn, and was proceeding on when he heard noise and getting out he saw Rosier had collided with the bank. He had no know. ledge that he touched the vehicle. Rosier said "I could not reasonably be expected to pull up at this speed on a slippery road."
The bench decided to dismiss the case.
