Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette 5th October 1844
Watlington Petty Sessions:-
Assault. - Eliza Brooks preferred a charge against George Fleet, for unlawfully beating her on the 23rd of September. Brooks stated that she went with her husband to Crowell Feast and late in the evening defendant quarrelled with her husband and attempting to part them, Fleet struck her a violent blow on the head. Thomas Bartlett, who witnessed the whole, said that Mrs Brooks used violent language and spit in the face of Fleet and that the quarrel happened between 1 and 2 O'clock in the morning. The magistrate severely admonished the woman for being from home and in such company so late, and dismissed the case ordering each party to pay the expenses, 4s 9d each.
