Funeral of Mr A E DENN
Pathetic scene at the graveside
Exceedingly pathetic in were the incidents associated with the funeral on Saturday afternoon, in the Isle of Sheppey of the late Mr Albert Edward DENN, of 4 Fleet Row, Mile Town. As reported in our last issue, the young widow had the melancholy task of identifying by means of certain articles of attire the body found on the Beech at Round Hill, Minster, as that of her husband, who in January accidentally fell off the tug Grinder in the dockyard. Mrs DENN is left with 5 little ones, and the greatest sympathy is felt for her in the irrepareble loss that she has sustained.
The deceased, who was only thirty years of age, was well known in Sheerness, and as stated at the time of the fatality, took upon nemerous occasions and active part in Sheppy football. Some of those who were acquainted with him in that particular were present at the graveside to pay the last tribute of respect. The remains were enclosed in a coffin of polished elm, and was completly covered with beautiful floral tributes. The mourners included the sorrowing widow (Mrs Daisy DENN), whose distress was painfully evident; the father, sisters and other relatives of the departed one; the little sons; the skipper and members of the crew of th tug Grinder; and others; whilst in the cemetery were assembled a large number of townspeople who had been attracted to the spot through reason of the special and peculiar saddness of the affair. The officiating clergyman was Rev. T H GROVES, curate of Minster Parish Church.
As the bereaved widow and other immediate relatives, following a last glance into the open grave, left the spot, the rev, gentleman, who is very popular in the Minster district, halted for a spell to speak some words of comfort and consolation.
Amongst the handsome floral tributes were the following:-
In loving memory, from his sorrowing Wife and Children.
In ever-loving memory of our dear Albert, from Dad and Florrie. "Gone but not forgotten."
With deepest sympathy and love to uncle Albert, from his nieces and nephews.
In loving sympath, from Mabel. "Oh hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in perl on the sea."
In loving memory, from his sister and brother, Edith and Ted.
From his loving sisters.
With deepest sympathy, from A NEWMAN.
In loving remembrance, from Mary and Jim.
In loving memory of our dear Albert, from his sister Rose.
A token of respect and esteem, from the officers and crew of HM tug Firm.
With deepest sympathy, from Mr and Mrs FULLER (Gillingham).
With loving sympath to uncle, from George and others.
With deepest sympathy, from his shipmates of HM tug Grinder.
In loving memory, from Eliza, George, and nephew.
In ever-loving memory of a dear son-in-lay from father and mother.
From his sorrowing dad, sisters, and brothers.
