Filming life in Polar wastes
Women in novel enterprise
An adventure is being planned to spend a winter 600 miles from the North Pole, and make films of the life spent there.
A British film company proposes to go to Devon Island, north of Canada. The party will number 15, and the navigator willbe Commander F. A. Worsley, who was captain of the Endurance, and chif navigator of Shackleton's Quest in 1921.
The making of the films will be in the hands of a London producer who has been responsible for the production of several British films of an unusual character.
"We shall form the first white settlement that has ever wintered there." said the film expert. "Our only neighbours will be the most northerly Esquimaux, and the nearest trading post will be 300 miles away."
Woman's farthest north.
The expedition will include two women. No white woman has ever before wintered so far north.
The principal picture will be a six reel romantic story written by Miss Winifred Graham, which will embody fact and legend of Esquimaux life.
It is intended also to produce a series of single-reel pictures of an educational character dealing with polar life.
The expedition will carry out some survey work and will explore tetority to which white men have not yet penetrated. A wireless receiving apparatus will be taken. The expedition is being organised by Mr. Victor Dines, who has recently returned from the Artic, in conjuction with Messrs. Keith McAllister and Co., of Great Winchester Street

A Crew Rescued
The rescue and transportation south of the four surviving members of the motor schooner Watts, which was wrecked on the rocks near the entrance to Frobisher Bay, Baffin island on October 30 1930, was another outstanding event of the voyage of the Beothic. Word of the presence of the four marooned sailors at Lake Harbour had been received by the expedition before it reached that post. The 80 ton motor vessel left Feterhead, Scotland September 1930, in charge of Captain Frederick LEWIS, of Kent England. The other members of the crew were Victor E. DINES and Herbert J. TURNER of Grays, Essex, England; Stephen ARMSTRONG, of London, England; and Walter BARNES of Peterhead. On October 14 after the Watts had been less than a month out, Captain LEWIS died and Victor DINES assumed command of the vessel. When the goal of the expedition had almost been reached the vessel was dashed on the rocks and the four members of the crew had a hard fight to reach shore. They salvaged practically nothing and were forced to subsist on food supplied by the Eskimos. In February of this year word reached R.C.M.P. at Lake Harbour of their plight. Corporal A. McKELLER led a patrol to the rescue of the castaways and they were brought to Lake Harbour where they were housed comfortably to await the arrival of the Beothic.
