THE DRINK. George Phillips was charged with being drunk and not having proper control of a horse and vehicle on Nov. 18 at Towersey. Defendant pleaded not guilty. - P.C. Wright said he found defendant in the Manor Road in charge of a pair of horses attached to a carriage. He was drunk, and driving the horses at a fast pace along the road. Witness got in front of the horses and asked defendant to stop, but he replied that he would run over him if he did not get out of the way. Witness tried to stop the horses, and in doing so was pushed into the ditch. Defendant struck him three times with a whip, and then drove on in the direction of Thame. Witness overtook him on his bicycle, when defendant again struck him with the whip. Witness then stopped the horses and kept them until defendant's employer came from the Spread Eagle, Thame. A lady had refused to enter the carriage owing to defendant's condition. - Defendant said he was not drunk, though he had been to a wedding, and had had a glass of whisky or so. He produced a letter from a doctor and references from gentlemen who knew him. He was fined 10s. inclusive.
