FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. CHARLES SUMMERFIELD. It was amid abundant signs of sympathy and regret that the mortal remains of the late Mr. Charles Summerfield, of "The Gate," Newland, were interred in the Priory-hill Cemetery, on Saturday afternoon. The deceased's friends had mustered in considerable numbers to pay their last respects, and the ceremony was indeed an impressive one. The funeral cortège left the deceased's home at three o'clock and proceeded to the White Hart street Primitive Methodist Chapel, where the first portion of the service was read by the Rev. Abijah Heaton who also conducted the commitment at the grave- side. The deceased's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Summerfield, and other members of the family, including Mr. and Mrs. George Summerfield, Mr. and Mrs. William Summerfield, Messrs. Fred, Jim, Will, and Miss Minnie Austin. Messrs. Tom and George Stratford, and their children rode in the three coaches which followed the hearse containing the coffin, and some dozen or more couples of the deceased's intimate friends walked in the rear. The coffin bore the inscription: "Charles Summerfield, died January 4th 1899, aged 21 years," and was literally covered with wreaths. At the grave-side there was a large crowd of sympathetic friends; and on Sunday the grave was surrounded almost continually by a huge concourse of people.
