Fatal Sequel to a Fire - Mr E Cecil Harris, County Coroner, held an inquest at the Board Room Sheppy Poor Law Institution on Saturday afternoon, relative to the death of Mrs Mary Ann Funge SLADE who died from injuries received in the fire in School Lane on Feb 14th when two cottages and a slaughter house were destroyed. John George Funge SLADE, the husband, who is eighty five years of age and was very much distressed stated that he could hardly recall what did happen, but to the best of his recollection, about 4am on February 14t he was upstairs on the bed and his wife was downstairs in a chair. As they were changing chairs, deceased knocked over table on which there was a lighted candle, and after witness relighted the candle his wife called his attention to some old paper and clothes on the floor which were burning. He tried to smother the fire, but was unsucessful and the flames spread to other articles in the room. The smoke was suffocating and he opened the door to let in fresh air and this made matters worse. He was burnt on the head. Mr VILE came to his assistance to help him save his wife, and someone else came and everything possible was done; they were got out of the room. Joseph WHELAN, able seaman, R.N. of HM flotilla leader Mackay, Nore Reserve, who also went to the rescue of Mrs SLADE stated that on entering the room he saw paper and rags burning on the floor. Witness found Mrs SLADE and dragged her out of the room. Deceased was badly burnt. When witness entered the room Mr SLADE was leaning over the burning rags trying to find his wife, and said to him "O where is she" Dr H A MADWAR, Medical Officee, Sheppy Union, stated that death was due to shock through extensive burns followed by congestion of the lungs. The Jury returned a verdict of "Accib=dental death" and expressed sympathy with the relatives. Able Seaman WHELAN and Mr VILE (a neighbour) were to be commended for the efforts they made.
