Charles Hughes was charged with having, at Bray-wick, on the 12th inst., assaulted Mary bis wife. It appeared the parties had been married about four months, the one being then a widower and the other a widow, both having families. About three weeks after marriage defendant had assaulted her, as well as on several other occasion. When in liquor on the 12th inst. he struck her several times, causing a discolouration of her arm. --The defence was that he had never struck her or threatened her. She had struck him, and had made her arms black by bis warding off her blows. -- Defendant was, however, convicted, and ordered to pay 41 and 10s. costs; in default, one month in Reading Gaol. He declared he would not pay, and was removed in custody.
