        "Killed in action at the battle of Yser, on 29th October, Lance-Corporal John Laverie, aged 28 years, eldest son of John Laverie, Muirhall, Larbert."

        "Mr John Laverie, Muirhall Road, Larbert, has been officially informed by the War Office that his son Lance-Corporal John Laverie, Gordon Highlanders, has been killed in action in the battle of the Yser on October 29. Lance-Corporal was a reservist, and was employed in engineering works at Renfrew when called up."
