THEFT BY BOYS.
Herbert Rye (12), Edward Rye (11) Wm. Wood (9), Arthur Jenner (7), Samuel Dine (7), on bail, were charged with breaking and entering St. Saviours' Schools, Tonbridge, and stealing four missionary boxes and contents. value 7s, on the 28th May, and there was a second charge against them of stealing six missionary boxes and contents, value 8s, from the same room on the following day.
Alice Leigh, a girl living with her parents. who are caretakers of the Mission Room, said on the 28th May there was a clothing club meeting in the room, and after it was over she locked it up and took the key home. She saw that the inside doors were closed, but two swing windows were open, and a little boy could get through them. She did not see either of the boys about the place.
Mrs Elizabeth Leigh, the mother of the last witness, said that on the following morning after her daughter brought her the key she went to the room and found two broken missionary boxes near the scullery door. She went to an unlocked drawer where she had placed the boxes safely before her little girl locked up, and found eight missing.
William Manser, a little boy, living with his parents at Shipbourne Road, said that he found several pieces of broken missionary boxes in the football field which adjoins the mission room. They were concealed under a lodge at the further end of the field and he handed them to the first witness. Before that Arthur Jenner asked him not to tell anyone if he told him where the missionary boxes were and he told him they were under the lodge in the field. He told him that the Cyes, Wood and Dine placed them where they were found. He also said that he and the other boys got through the mission room window which was open.
Inspector Savage said that about noon on Tuesday, he apprehended the boys on the charge when Jenner said that the big boy Rye helped him in the window when he unfastened the door and let the others in. They took four boxes and the boys Rye put them under their coats and broke them open in the meadow. They all had some of the money but he did not know how much there was in the boxes as he only had fivepence. He added that they bought sweets with the money, Wood stated that he did not go into the school but stood outside and watched and had eightpence altogether. Herbert Rye said that they did not take all the boxes on Monday as they went again on Tuesday. They all helped to break them open and he had one sixpence and his brother Ted 1s, Wood 8d, Jenner 8d, and Dine had 5d, and he gave him twopence afterwards. Dine said that he only had 5 ½ d first and the boy Rye gave him 2½ d afterwards. Edward Rye said that they were all as bad as one another as they were all there on Monday and Tuesday and he had a shilling.
The boys pleaded guilty to both charges.
Supt. Styles said that in March, Edward Rye was sentenced to four strokes with the birch rod for stealing eggs and apples from a shop.
The Bench said that they were sorry to see such young offenders here and were afraid that it was the fault of their not being properly looked after at home. For the first offence, Herbert Rye would receive 8 strokes with the birch rod, Edward Rye 6 strokes, Wood 3 strokes, and the other two boys 2 strokes each. For the second offence, their parents would have to enter into recognizances in £5 to bring them up for judgment if called upon. Supt. Styles said that Edward Rye was under recognizance in £5 to keep the peace for a year. Mrs Rye said that she did not care to be bound for her boys as they had been such a trouble but the mother of the other boys were bound over. Eventually Mrs Rye consented to be bound over the same as the other mothers.
