The maid married the gardener 50 years ago
SMILING happily while celebrating their golden wedding on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. George Fowler of 1, Bangors-cottages Norwood-lane, Iver Heath, aged 71 and 72 respectively.
She met her husband when he came to do some gardening at the house in which she was a domestic servant-and there began the romance which has now reached its fiftieth year.
MOTOR ENGINEER
They were married August 31 in Ewelme parish church by Canon Cruttwell. Born in Upminster, Mr. Fowler later went to live at North Enfield. For a time he worked at the Ediswan electrical factory and then became a motor engineer. For the past 15 years he was with Road Research at Colnbrook until he was forced to retire.
An Old Contemptible, he served with the Army Service Corps as a mechanic during the 1914-18 war in France and Belgium.
Cheerful and energetic, Mrs. Archer [sic] has little to tell of her life except hard work. She entered domestic service as a girl of twelve and stayed until she was married at 22. We have lived in this cottage 41 years and I don't want to leave it," she said.
She does all the housework and enjoys working in her delightful little flower garden.
ICED CAKE
Mrs. Fowler made a special iced cake for the celebration party attended by her four sons -Frank, Jack, Percy, Eric, and four daughters - Margaret, May. Doris and Elsie.
Mr. and Mrs. Fowler have four grandsons, six granddaughters, and one great - grandson. "I have a wonderful family," declared Mrs. Fowler
The children presented their mother with a gold bracelet and their father with a gold pencil. Gifts of flowers and several telegrams were also received, including one from Mr. Fowler's brother, Mr. Jack Fowler and his family, in New Zealand.
