LECTURE AND MUSIC. - On Tuesday evening the Rev. E. J. Howman gave a lecture in the Reading Room, the subject being "The land we live in." There was a very good attendance. The lecture was interspersed with some simple sacred music, beautifully performed, the efforts of the string band, under the guidance of Master Walter Cocks, being particularly nicely rendered. Several of the band were very young, the youngest being the little daughter of Mr. Thomas White, C.C., who played the violin very correctly and in excellent time. The cultivation of really refined and elevating music by these young performers is in every way to be commended and encouraged, and their performances on Tuesday evening reflect upon them the greatest credit. The concluding piece was the composition of Master Walter Cocks, youngest son of Mr. John Cocks, of Chinnor. It possesses many pleasing repetition strains, and included the grand "Russian National Air," of Vloff. Master Cocks is to be congratulated upon his composition, and it is hoped he will persevere to write more. The lecturer at the close informed the audience that the Reading Room has, by voluntary efforts, been purchased for the parish, and will shortly be formally handed over to the parishioners.
