Petty Sessions
OVER-CROWDING AT RAYDON. - Mr. Wm. Chuffy Whitty, of Raydon, was charged with being the owner of a cottage at Raydon in the occupation of Arthur Tuckwell, labourer, which by reason of over crowding was become a nuisance and injurious to the health of the inmates. - Mr. H. Kerridge, Inspector of Nuisances to the Samford Rural Sanitary Authority, said he visited the house on June 30th, and found that it was inhabited by ten persons, Mr. and Mrs. Tuckwell and their eight children; there was only one bedroom for all. He served a notice on Mr. Whitty, the landlord, and Mr. Tuckwell, the tenant, requiring them to abate the nuisance within 14 days but on the 21st inst. this had not been done. - Mr. Whitty pleaded that when he let the house to Tuckwell the latter's family was not so large, and he could not turn them out now, because there was nowhere for them to go. He had received no rent for the last two years. - The Bench retired, and on returning into court, the Vice-Chairman said they were of opinion that Mr. Whitty was not responsible for the overcrowding. There would be an order on the tenant to abate the nuisance within 14 days. The tenant's wife, who was present, said this would be done.
