“No 1 Driver in Oxford Road Collision”
SAID to have gained several safe driving awards, including "No. 1 A.R.P. driver" during the last war, Mrs. Kate V. Young, of 6 Hensington Road, Woodstock, was fined £10 for careless driving at Deddington on Friday. The charge was reduced from dangerous driving.
Mr. M. Cole prosecuted and defendant, who was represented by Mr. E. A. Ferguson, pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving.
Mr. Cole said that at 3.30 p.m. on September 27th Mrs. Young was driving her car along the Oxford Road in the direction of Banbury. Near the Duns Tew crossroads she was following a coach which was behind a 30 foot slow-moving British Road Services lorry.
The motor-coach pulled out to overtake the lorry and defendant did likewise. At the same time a car was coming from the opposite direction and defendant's view was obscured. The coach was able to get by, but Mrs. Young was not quite so fortunate and, as she was driving on the wrong side of the road, collided with the front off-side wing of the oncoming car.
Edward Joseph Weeks, of Middlesex, the driver of the car, said that he was practically stationary at the time of impact. Mr. Cole: Did the coach cause you any inconvenience ? - Yes. I believe it was partly to blame for the accident.
Norman Arthur Middleton, of Robins Island, Banbury, driver of the lorry, said he was travelling at about 20 m.p.h., when he was overtaken by the coach followed by the car.
On oath, Mrs. Young said she had gained several awards for safe driving. During the war she was a number one A.R.P. driver and drove all sorts of vehicles, including public health vehicles.
She said she had driven along the Oxford Road every week for 25 years and knew the particular bend where the collision occurred, very well. On this occasion her view was obscured by the bus, and when she applied her brakes her car skidded.
The Magistrates reduced the charge to one of careless driving. to which defendant pleaded guilty. She was fined £10, with 14s. 7d. costs and £2 2s. advocates' fees.

        Unknown Coach Blamed for Accident
        Bloxham Man Fined £10

A "Royal Blue" motor coach driven by an unknown driver, was blamed by a Royal Air Force civilian chauffeur at Deddington Sessions on Fri- day as being a large contributory part in an accident which occurred on the Oxford/Ba bury Road, on September 22nd Edward Joseph Weeks, the chauffeur, of 15 Lees Road, Hillingdon, Middlesex, said the coach's action in overtaking a slow moving British Road Services lorry, on a stretch of road where there was a continuous white line, was in his opinion, really the cause why Kate Verenia Young, a driver with 25 years' experience, of 6, Hensington Road, Woodstock, collided with his car, after the coach had swung back sharply to its proper side of the road.
But Mrs. Young, who pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving, was fined £10 with £4 14s. 7d. costs, and licence endorsement, for driving without due care and attention.
Norman Arthur Middleton, of 1, Robins Island, Banbury (one of several witnesses) the driver of the B.R.S. lorry, said that traffic was very heavy at the time. The coach "swung- in" rather sharply after over- taking him, but it did not in- convenience him. He was driving at about 20 m.p.h,
