Watlington Threshing Machine Fatality.
Boy Beaten to death. On Friday afternoon a shocking accident occured on Golder Manor Farm, when a lad, Walter Ronald DAVIS (16 1/2), was almost instantaneously killed by falling head first into the drum of a threasing machine whilst the beaters were revolving at the rate of a thousand revolutions a minute. The injuries to the boy were of a terrible nature, but mercifully death must have been practically instantaneous. It will be remembered that a terrific gale was experienced that afternoon, the wind blowing at times at the rate of 10 miles per hour. When rain came on the lad left his place on the threashing machine, where he wwas engaged in cutting the string holding the sheaves of wheat together, to put on an overcoat. Afterwards he mounted the ladder placed at the end of the machine and was seen to get safely on the boards, but what happened afterwards can only be surmised. The feeder had his back to the lad and saw nothing; there were a number of sheaves between them as well. All of a sudden a "thump" was heard and the drum stopped working and the feeder, on turning, saw the lads arms right up to the shoulders between the beaters and the drum, with his head pressed tightly against the drum. He gave the alarm and the driver instantly stopped the machinery. The feeder Horace ABBOT, tried his uttermost to extricate the deceased, but he was so tightly wedged in the drum that it took three menhalf an hour to get the body out. Mr NORMAN immediately went for Dr. MOORE, and he and Insp. GREEN were quickly on the scene but could do nothing.
