        Cement Works Fatality: The Inquest
On Wednesday night Mr. Arthur Lett, the Deputy Coroner, held an inquest upon the body of George Witney (58), a married man, residing in the village, who was killed instantaneously at the Cement and Lime Works the previous day. Mr. C. C. Bull was foreman of the jury.
The widow, who gave the age of her husband, said when she last saw him at 12.50 p.m. on the day in question he was in good health.
John Parker, quarryman at the works, said he worked alongside the deceased. At about 2.15 p.m. he noticed that the deceased’s truck was empty, and that he took up his pick to commence "pecking" the face. He (witness), working five yards away, went off with his full truck of chalk to the shoot, a distance of about 150 yards away. When he turned to look back he missed the deceased. He went back to the place and found him lying on his back. He was dead. The deceased's truck was out of its place, by about 14 yards. There was a quantity of chalk on the floor which was not there when witness left. He ran and informed Mr. Benton immediately. The frost and rain of the previous day had affected the chalk. The deceased was on the left side of his line of metals. He thought, while falling, the head of the deceased caught the top of the tub of the truck, which was three feet high.
In answer to Mr. Benton, witness said the deceased was working on the left side of the line, head on. He found the body on the right side. Victor Stroud, a ganger at the works, said he was running the machinery ten chains away. He went up to the spot with Mr. Benton, and found the deceased dead. He thought Witney heard the fall of chalk and went to his right, caught the metals and fell, hitting his head against the tub of the truck. His pick was buried in the fall of chalk. His two shovels were nearly buried by the fall, and the tub was too far back for filling purposes. He thought about 14 tons of chalk fell.
Norman M. Benton, manager of the cement works, said about 2.20 p.m. on the 4th inst. he was at the works, when Jack Witney reported the accident. He made enquiries, and went up to the scene with a stretcher. He found George Witney lying on his back bleeding at the mouth. He was dead. The body was carried to the office, and the doctor and police sent for. The deceased was bleeding at the left ear, the nose and mouth. He could find no scalp wound. Between his waistcoat and shirt was a quantity of small clay. In his opinion, seeing that the man's tools were buried, the deceased stepped back and to his right, and then fell on to the tub. There was a ton of fallen material, partly chalk, the size of a man's head, with about two feet of clay on top.
The jury returned a verdict that the de- ceased died from fracture of the base of the skull accidentally received while at work.
On the suggestion of Mr. Bull, the fees and witness's expenses were handed to the widow, together with an expression of sympathy.
The following afternoon Mr. Lett, accompanied by Mr. Bull, visited the scene of the accident, when, with the aid of one of the workmen, the accident was re-constructed, Later on the man's pick was discovered buried on the right side of the metals.
