Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette 31 December 1926:-
        Woman's Fall Downstairs
        Lodgers Painful Discovery
On Boxing Day Mr. Arthur Lett held an inquest in the Reading Room, Chinnor, on the body
of Sarah Witney, aged 65, of Station Road, Chinnor, who was found dead on Christmas
night. Albert Parslow said that he lodged with the deceased, and on Christmas Day he was
away until 10.30 p.m. Returning by way of the back door, he sat down by the fire for an hour
waiting for his mate. He came in just before 11. They got their own supper, and then
started for bed. On opening the stair door leading from the room they were in, they saw
the deceased lying on her head at the bottom. The body was up against the wall and the
head close to the door. The body was fully dressed. At the top of the stairs he found that the
stair carpet had become detached. He sent for the police.
Annie Seymour stated that she saw the deceased on Christmas Eve, and then invited her
to her house to tea, but she did not come.
Dr. A. L. Bright Stevens said he was called to the house at 12.45 in the night: he found
deceased at the foot of the stairs. She had been dead, in his opinion, about three hours.
The body was fully clothed; there was a large soft mass on the scalp. If the deceased
tripped and fell from the top of the stairs the wound was consistent with the fractured
        skull.
P.C. Lord said he was called to the house by Parslow, and at midnight he arrived and
found the body at the bottom of the stairs; it was lying on its right side. He inspected the rooms, and at the top of the stairs he found a portion of the stair carpet, between two tacks, was raised two inches. One could have caught one's foot in. There was no sign of a light in the bedroom occupied by the deceased. He imagined that she lay down on the bed and woke up when dark; she hurried to get downstairs, and then tripped and fell to the bottom.
The Coroner said he held an inquest on the deceased's husband three years ago, and then found the house in a very clean condition
A verdict of accidental death was returned.
