        BULLINGDON PETTY SESSIONS
        SATURDAY [20th January]
(Before Captain Mark U. Weyland, in the chair: Mr. F. H. Alden and Mr. E. E. Nevell.)
        DESERTING WIFE AND CHILDREN.
George Bass, Spriggs Alley, Chinnor, a labourer, was summoned for deserting his wife, Annie Bass, and his three children, at Thame, on August 3, 1911. -Defendant pleaded not guilty.
Mr. E. W. Hedges said defendant's wife and three children had been chargeable to the Thame Union Workhouse since Aug. 3rd last. Defendant brought the family to Thame and then went away.
Annie Bass stated that on July 28th of last year her husband took the family to Thame. They took some furniture, and defendant left them at witness's cousin's house; he said he was going away to try and get work, and would send some money on. Defendant went away the same day, and she had not seen him since. After having been with her cousin for three weeks she and the family were forced to go to the workhouse, and had been there ever since. She wrote once to an address, where she thought defendant was staying, but received no reply.
Defendant, giving evidence on oath, said he had only been able to get just enough work to live on. He did not know his wife and family were in the workhouse. During the time he had been away from Thame he had been to Canada and back working on a ship, and out of his earnings he saved £2 5s. He returned to England in December, and had only had two days' work since, at Harrow. He drew a pension on Oct. 14th.
The Bench bound defendant over to come up for judgment when called upon within the next six months, on promising to take his wife and family out of the workhouse.
