Petty Sessions. Tuesday, June 14. Present - Mr. P. J. D. Wykeham (chairman) and Mr. S. H. Pearce.
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.- Herbert Lester, labourer, of Thame, was charged with attempting to commit suicide there on May 13 by cutting his throat with a knife.-Frederick George Lomas, stoker at the Thame Gas Works, proved being called by a younger brother to see defendant, who was lying on the ground in his back yard, partly on his right side. Witness asked him what was the matter, but he made no reply. There was a pool of blood on the ground just under his head. Witness's father assisted in lifting him up, and they then noticed that he had a knife clenched tightly in his left hand. He could not stand, so they put him on his back. Witness's father took the knife from him and threw it on one side. Witness then saw a terrible gash in his throat, where- upon he sent for the doctor and the police. When they had him on his back witness said to him "What made you do this, Herb?" He said "I know you, Fred; know you both. I asked everyone I could to give me a job, and no one would take any notice of me, and that is why I did it." They remained with defendant until his brother Fred came, and they then bathed his head with cold water until Dr. Lee arrived and ordered him to be lifted into the house. - Dr. Bruce said he saw defendant on the evening of May 13. Dr. Lee was in attendance. Defendant was suffering from a gaping wound in the throat. The windpipe was partially severed, but the large blood vessels had just escaped. He was in a very collapsed state, and suffering from loss of blood. The knife produced would be likely to cause such a wound. In reply to the Chairman, the witness said he had no means of judging whether defend- ant was in his right state of mind. - P.S. Lambourn also gave evidence. - The Bench questioned defendant's wife as to whether there was any reason for his attempting to take his life, but Mrs. Lester said there was none that she knew of, except that he was unable to get work.-In answer to the Bench, defendant said he was very sorry it had happened, and it should never occur again. - The Bench, having admonished him as to the seriousness of the offence, bound him over in the sum of £10 to come up for judgment when called upon.
