DEATH OF MR. W. BARBER FATHER OF TRING'S V.C.
Mr. William Barber, father of the late Pte. Edward Barber Tring's V.C., passed away at 56, High Street, Northchurch, on Saturday, at the age of 76, after a three weeks' illness. Mr. Barber was a native of Tring and had spent the whole of his life in the town, latterly at 73, Miswell Lane, until he and Mrs. Barber removed to North- church about six months ago.
A gas and hot water fitter by trade, Mr. Barber originally worked for Mr. W. J. Tompkins and then with Messrs. W. J. and A. H. Dawe, ironmongers, who in turn carried on business at the premises in the High Street now occupied by Messrs. Robins and Marriott, motor engineers. He was finally employed by the Tring Gas Company, but physical incapacity compelled him to give up his work about seven years ago. He was a member of the Tring
("Sincerity") Lodge of Oddfellows, and was held in the highest respect by his fellow members and all others with whom he came into contact.
Mrs. Barber and three sons survive him. Two sons gave their lives in the war. Private Edward Barber of the Grenadier Guards, won the V.C. for bravery at Neuve Chapelle. He ran in front of a grenade company and threw bombs with such effect that numbers of Germans at once surrendered. When his Company came up Private Barber was found quite alone, with the enemy surrendering all around him. He was afterwards killed by a sniper's bullet.
The funeral of Mr. Barber took place at the Aylesbury Road Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon. the service being taken by the Rev. C. W. G. Bayliss, rector of Drayton Beauchamp., The family mourners included Mrs. Barber and her three surviving sons.
